Voyager (Outlander #3) by Diana Gabaldon

voyagerFrom goodreads:

Their passionate encounter happened long ago by whatever measurement Claire Randall took. Two decades before, she had traveled back in time and into the arms of a gallant eighteenth-century Scot named Jamie Fraser. Then she returned to her own century to bear his child, believing him dead in the tragic battle of Culloden. Yet his memory has never lessened its hold on her… and her body still cries out for him in her dreams.

Then Claire discovers that Jamie survived. Torn between returning to him and staying with their daughter in her own era, Claire must choose her destiny. And as time and space come full circle, she must find the courage to face the passion and pain awaiting her…the deadly intrigues raging in a divided Scotland… and the daring voyage into the dark unknown that can reunite or forever doom her timeless love.

This book by far is my absolute favorite and that’s not a statement I often make.

If I enjoyed Dragonfly in Amber, I fell in love with this book and I couldn’t read fast enough.  I was on the edge of my seat with anticipation because I had to know if Claire and Jamie would end up together or if they would even find each other!!  The stress nearly gave me an ulcer and there were moments where I didn’t expect to laugh but I did and did so loudly.

“Do ye want me?” he whispered. “Sassenach, will ye take me – and risk the man that I am, for the sake of the man ye knew?”

While there are POV shifts in the last book, it happens a lot more in Voyager and it switches from 1st person narrative to 3rd person which takes some getting used to.  However, Diana Gabaldon’s writing, in my opinion is flawless and she weaved a story that left me completely and utterly satisfied.

Roughly, the first 30% of the book is about Jaime and Claire and how they survived life without each for 20 years! TWENTY YEARS!!  There is so much longing for each other that I thought I might die on the spot!  But it’s not just longing, it’s a deep feeling of melancholy coupled with loneliness and I felt that to my core.  And all because they missed each other and what they had to do to survive.

Everything they felt, I felt.  I felt every blessed moment as if I were Claire.

“I shook so that it was some time before I realized that he was shaking too, and for the same reason. I don’t know how long we sat there on the dusty floor, crying in each others arms with the longing of twenty years spilling down our faces.”

Don’t even get me started on the re-discovery of one another. OHMIGOD…the secrets of Jamie’s past coming to light was gut-wrenching, not because they were awful secrets but because he wasn’t sure how Claire would react.   And how could he know?  They’re practically strangers who love each other.

“For so many years, for so long, I have been so many things, so many different men. But here,” he said, so softly I could barely hear him, “here in the dark, with you… I have no name.”

This story was the most engaging one yet and I was re-acquainted with supporting characters I missed, new characters were introduced and I’m officially attached to all of them.

And yes, I’m fairly certain I will be reading nothing but this series for the next few weeks. ;)

Melliane…it’s so good. It took me a while to realize the greatness of this series. I would say this and The Bronze Horseman are by my favorite EPIC series. Yup…that good! :)

I’m just skimming your review for now in case of spoilers — I still haven’t read the 2nd one yet!! I will soon though!! So glad you’re enjoying this series so much!! My friend REALLY loves it too, I’ve heard nothing but great things. I just know all the books are HUGE and I’m pretty sure once I start on the 2nd, I won’t want to read anything buy this series (or do anything else, LOL). Happy reading!

I completely understand! *wink* These books are insanely long…like ridiculously so! Even when I think I’ve made progress and then I check, I’ve only read 2%! I’ve been reading the fourth book since Sunday and I’m only 20% in! WHAT?? LOL…I loved the 2nd book but the third one…FAVORITE. ♥

LOL…they are in their late 40’s. I didn’t read the blurb of this particular book and I had no idea what I was getting into but oh boy, whatta ride! It’s seriously a wonderful series and eventually I will re-read the first book because I never appreciated it the way I should have. But I am so glad I gave this series a second chance! #noregrets :)

I haven’t heard of this series, but oh boy does it sound awesome and kick-ass! Twenty years without your loved one? That was probably a huge catastrophic event for the characters, haha, but I bet it changed them! The quotes that you’ve chosen are so lovely! Ah, I can’t wait to get my hands on the first book! Fabulous review!

Thanks Michelle!!! ♥ It’s a FANTASTIC series! The emotional roller-coaster nearly did me in but I loved every moment of it. These books are long but well worth it if you like time travel or historical fiction and obviously, romance. *wink* And they’ve done a good job on STARZ in taking it from book to the silver screen. :)

I am in love with this series and I know I will suffer from a serious book hangover once I’m done with all 8 books. Which by the way, is taking me forever to finish b/c they are so freakin’ long. And the writing is EPIC but if you decide not to read it…definitely watch it on STARZ. I mean, SAM HEUGHAN…’nuff said. ♥

Jeann…I definitely am and I’m officially addicted. I’m already starting the 5th book! Crazy, I know! And trust me, book 3 is all sorts of romantic filled with longing and all that other good stuff! *wink* ♥
